Smoke Vents

Logistics Lighting supplies automatic smoke and heat vents for warehouses, distribution centers, factories and other large single-story buildings. A smoke vent sits on a roof curb like a skylight, but its cover is held shut by a latch and fusible link; when the link melts at its rated temperature the doors spring open and release heat and smoke so firefighters can get in and the building stays tenable longer. We distribute vents from Sunoptics, Kingspan Light + Air, VELUX Commercial and Taylon, quote them against your curb dimensions and fire-protection design, and ship direct from the factory.

Smoke vents by manufacturer

Sunoptics Signature Series. Double-door vents with prismatic polycarbonate glazing on a thermally broken 870B aluminum frame, so they daylight the floor every day and only open in a fire. The SSVT 4080 with a 360 F link is FM rated; the SSVT 4080 with a 370 F link is UL listed. The SVT2 5080 covers a 5 x 8 curb with a 212 F link, and the SVT2CV 4080 adds a continuous vent blade for everyday ventilation.

Kingspan Light + Air. The 4896 A ULSV family is a UL-listed aluminum double-door vent with exterior release and a 10 lb uplift rating, offered single or double glazed and with a 360 F or 370 F link; the louvered LV version adds a vented base. The 5596 ASLDOUL and 55102 ASLDOUL are UL-listed drop-out (melt-out) vents with a single-leaf acrylic dome and no moving parts. For larger openings there is the 6060 SVAA bubble-dome double-door vent and the 6072 SVAM with an insulated metal lid and 30 lb uplift. The T4896 SSV smoke hatch is a non-listed, torsion-spring single-leaf unit for jurisdictions that do not require a listing.

VELUX Commercial. The ULSV2DCM 4896S2E (360 F) and ULSV2DCM 4896S2F (370 F) are UL-listed double-dome vents on a galvanized steel frame with exterior manual release. VELUX also makes the CSOS shrink-out line, a melt-out dome with no mechanism at all, in 4848, 4872 and 4896 sizes, plus a UL-listed 4896 version with a 360 F link.

Taylon. The 4896 ULSV is a UL-listed, 800 lb impact-tested vent with a galvanized steel frame and exterior manual release; the 4896 ULVSV adds a Max Flow venting base with rain guard and insect screens for buildings that need everyday airflow as well as fire venting.

Which fusible link temperature?

The link temperature is set by the fire-protection design, not by the vent. Vents are commonly supplied with 165, 212, 360 or 370 F links; sprinklered buildings generally use a higher link temperature so the vent does not open before the sprinklers have controlled the fire, and the local fire marshal or the fire-protection engineer of record should confirm the setting. The model codes on this page carry the link temperature in the name (360, 370, 212), so the product you order matches the submittal.

Operable vents versus melt-out vents

Operable (spring-open) vents such as the Sunoptics SSVT, Kingspan ULSV and VELUX ULSV2 can be reset after they open, and they are the choice where the code requires a listed, testable vent. Melt-out or drop-out vents such as the VELUX CSOS and Kingspan ASLDOUL have a glazing panel that softens and falls away at temperature; they are simpler and lower in cost but are replaced after an event. The two types take different fall protection: operable vents accept interior safety screens only, because an exterior screen would block the doors, while melt-out vents take exterior screens only. Sizes, curbs and codes

Smoke vents come in standard sizes only. The most common opening is 4 x 8, which the manufacturers name 4896 (48 x 96 inch curb inside dimension) or 4080 (4 ft 0 in by 8 ft 0 in); both fit a curb that measures roughly 51 x 99 outside. If an existing curb is a non-standard size, a curb adapter lets a standard vent fit it. Matching curbs are on the roof curbs page, including the AES 4896 ARC6 curb for VELUX vents, which sets its safety screen 1 inch below the curb top to clear the vent mechanism. Quantity and placement of vents are determined by the architect or fire-protection engineer under IBC Section 910 and NFPA 204; listings are to UL 793 and FM 4430. Vents are inspected annually, and they are not intended for routine ventilation. If you need daily airflow, choose a model with a louvered or vented base or a continuous vent blade.
