Logistics Lighting supplies the roof access and fall protection hardware that goes with commercial skylights and smoke vents: fixed roof ladders, roof hatches, hatch guardrails, ladder safety posts, and the safety screens, cages and guards that make a skylight opening OSHA compliant. These products come from Kattsafe, Bilco, Babcock Davis, Dur-Red (Activar), Kingspan Light + Air, Curbs Plus, Sunoptics, VELUX, Taylon and Safety Rail Source, and we quote them alongside the skylights and curbs they attach to.
Skylight safety screens, cages and guards
OSHA 1910.28 requires that a skylight 4 feet or more above a lower level be protected by a screen, guardrail, cover or personal fall-arrest system, and a screen has to hold 400 lb or twice the intended load. Interior screens mount under the skylight, attached to the curb, and are the only type permitted on operable smoke vents: the Kingspan 4896 SSCRN, 4848 SSCRN and 6072 SSCRN are 4 x 4 inch welded wire in galvanized steel; Curbs Plus builds the same idea as a Z-frame screen in 4896, 4848 and 36120; VELUX offers the CRGA 4896 ICDS with 6 inch spacing; and Sunoptics makes the CLPOG safety and security guard in 4080, 4040 and 5060 plus 5 inch on-center burglar bars. Exterior screens cover the dome from above and are the type used on melt-out smoke vents and on skylights that cannot take an interior screen: the Sunoptics ESFP 4080 and ESFP 4040, the VELUX CAE 4896 and CAES 4896 in 4 gauge wire, the Kingspan Gladiator cages (4896 SCAGE, 5596 SCAGE) and the Safety Rail Source SCS36120G for 3 x 10 corrugated skylights. Taylon's 4896 FPBA is an aluminum fall protection bar set that weighs about a third of the steel equivalent.
Roof hatches and hatch guardrails
A roof hatch gives maintenance staff a safe way onto the roof from a fixed ladder or ship stair. The standard opening is 36 x 30 inches (OSHA's minimum is 30 x 30). Bilco's S-20 is the galvanized steel standard and the S-50TB is the thermally broken aluminum version; Babcock Davis offers the BG3630 and the thermally broken ThermalMAX BRHTA36x30S1T; Dur-Red's RHUVA 30 x 36 is a domed ladder hatch that admits daylight. Every hatch should have a guardrail with a self-closing gate around the opening: the Bilco RL2-S and RL2-STB Bil-Guard, the Babcock Davis SRCAY36X30FG and SRBAY36X30FG, the Dur-Red RSRWB, or Kattsafe's non-penetrating KG hatch guardrail, which clamps on and adjusts to the common hatch sizes.
Fixed ladders, ladder posts and guardrail
Kattsafe's aluminum fixed ladders are OSHA and ANSI compliant with serrated rungs and a 42 inch stile extension above the landing: the RL20 is the angled-mount model, the RL30 is vertical, and the RL40 is a vertical caged ladder. Since OSHA's 2018 update, cages are no longer required on new ladders over 24 feet; a personal fall-arrest or ladder safety system is the preferred approach. The GRLP ladder protector keeps unauthorized people off an exterior ladder, and the KD001 landing platform gives portable ladders a secure attachment point at the roof edge. Ladder safety posts that extend above the hatch for a handhold are the Bilco LU-1 Ladder Up, Babcock Davis BSPY and Dur-Red LP-4. For roof-edge and equipment-area fall protection without penetrating the membrane, the Kattsafe KattGuard GR34 freestanding guardrail ships as a 12 foot kit with returns and base pads.
Matching screens to skylights and vents
Screens and cages are sized to the curb inside dimension or the skylight frame, not to the nominal size, so a 4896 skylight may need a 47.5 x 95.5 interior screen or a 53.5 x 100 exterior cage depending on the brand. Each product page lists the fit dimension, and the terminology glossary explains ICD, OCD and frame dimensions. If you tell us the skylight or vent model, we will pick the screen that fits it.
