Bilco roof hatches and Bil-Guard rail systems from Logistics Lighting
The Bilco Company makes the roof hatches most commercial buildings use for maintenance access, together with the Bil-Guard hatch rail system and the Ladder Up safety post. Logistics Lighting distributes the Bilco products listed above, quotes them with the ladder and railing that complete the access point, and ships direct from Bilco.
What we carry from Bilco
Roof hatches. The S-20 is the standard 36 x 30 inch (3 ft 0 in by 2 ft 6 in) hatch: 14 gauge galvanized steel cover, 12 inch curb with cap flashing, 40 psf live load rating, spring latch with inside and outside padlock hasps, prime-painted cover and curb. The S-50TB is the thermally broken version in 11 gauge aluminum with 3 inches of insulation in curb and cover, for buildings where the hatch is a significant thermal bridge. Both hinge on the 30 inch side.
Bil-Guard rail systems. A permanent guardrail with a self-closing gate around the hatch opening, in aluminum alloy with stainless steel springs and a safety yellow powder coat. The RL2-S fits the S-20 and the RL2-STB is the thermally broken version for the S-50TB; both have the gate on the 30 inch side.
Ladder Up safety post. The LU-1 is a telescoping steel post that mounts to the top rungs of a fixed ladder and extends above the hatch opening to give a handhold when stepping on and off the ladder, with mounting hardware included.
Sizing and code notes
OSHA's minimum roof hatch opening is 30 x 30 inches; the 36 x 30 size fits a person carrying tools and is the industry standard. A hatch should be paired with a guardrail and self-closing gate (OSHA 1910.28 treats the open hatch as a hole) and with a ladder safety post so the climber has a grab point above the roof line. Bilco's drawings are on the roof hatch and ladder spec sheets page, and the FAQ covers hatch and ladder questions.
Where Bilco fits in our catalog
Bilco is the standard specification for steel and thermally broken aluminum hatches. Babcock Davis offers an equivalent 36 x 30 hatch and ThermalMAX aluminum version with its own railing and post, and Dur-Red (Activar) makes a domed ladder hatch that admits daylight. Fixed ladders to reach the hatch come from Kattsafe, whose KG guardrail is a non-penetrating alternative to the Bil-Guard. All of these are on the roof access and fall protection page.
