The Bilco RL2-S is the Bil-Guard 2.0 roof hatch rail system for the standard 36 x 30 inch hatch, including the Bilco S-20. It is a permanent guardrail with a self-closing gate that bolts to the hatch capflashing, so it goes on without penetrating the roof membrane and satisfies OSHA 29 CFR 1910.29 with a factor of safety of two. Key features of the Bil-Guard 2.0 RL2-S
- Mounts to the capflashing. Extruded aluminum brackets clamp to the hatch flashing, so nothing is drilled into the roof and the roofing warranty is untouched.
- Self-closing gate. Stainless steel self-closing hinges and a positive latch keep a continuous barrier around the opening while someone is on the ladder.
- High-visibility finish. Safety yellow powder coat as standard; other colors as a special order.

Why a hatch needs a rail
OSHA 1910.28 classifies an open roof hatch as a hole, and a worker stepping off the ladder onto the roof has an unprotected opening at their feet. A fixed rail with a self-closing gate is the simplest permanent fix because it needs no personal fall-arrest gear and no training beyond closing the gate.
