Commercial skylights by manufacturer

Sunoptics Signature Series. Prismatic polycarbonate domes on a thermally broken 800MD aluminum frame, FM rated as standard and available in an HVHZ version for high-wind zones. The SMD 4080 C2W1 is the 4 x 8 workhorse for distribution centers; the SMD 4040, SMD 4060 and SMD 5060 cover 4 x 4, 4 x 6 and 5 x 6 curbs. Where you need a skylight that also ventilates, the SSCBL1 4080 adds a single-blade continuous vent.

VELUX Dynamic Dome (CMD2). A double-glazed LuxGuard dome with a clear UV-guard polycarbonate outer layer over white prismatic polycarbonate, FM approved, on a thermally broken aluminum frame. VELUX offers the widest size range in our catalog, from the CMD2 2448 up to the CMD2 7272, with the CMD2 4848, CMD2 4896, CMD2 6060 and CMD2 6072 the most common. The X1P2 versions, such as the CMD2 4848 X1P2, are LuxGuard PLUS units that carry hurricane and Florida product approvals. If you are replacing Wasco skylights, this is the line to look at: the Wasco commercial program is now part of VELUX.

Kingspan Light + Air. The 1100 Series KAT dome comes single, double or triple glazed. The 4896 KT11 and 4848 KT11 are triple-glazed units with a 16 mm multi-wall polycarbonate inner layer for buildings where the energy code drives the U-factor; the 4896 KS11 is the single-glazed version. The Alumilite 4689 KT12 fits the 46.25 x 89.5 inch curbs found on many older industrial roofs.

Taylon Skylights. Industrial polycarbonate units with a white Diamond Series arched dome, ICC listed (ESR-5273) and tested to an 800 lb impact. The 4896 ISP is single glazed, the 4896 ISP2 is the double-dome version, and the 4896 ISPV adds a galvanized vented base.

Birdview Skylights. The 4848 TBCM and 4896 TBCM are thermally broken curb-mount double domes available in acrylic or polycarbonate, multiple dome colors and frame finishes, and either Miami-Dade HVHZ or standard certification. Birdview also builds custom sizes.

Sizes and how the model numbers work

Commercial skylights are named by nominal size, and two conventions are in use. AES, Curbs Plus, Kingspan, Taylon, Birdview and VELUX use inches: a 4896 unit is built for a 48 x 96 inch curb inside dimension. Sunoptics uses feet and inches: a 4080 unit is 4 ft 0 in by 8 ft 0 in, which is the same 4 x 8 opening. When you are matching a replacement skylight to an existing curb, the number that matters is the curb outside dimension (OCD) the frame has to sit over. A standard 4 x 8 curb with 48 x 96 inside measures about 51 x 99 outside, and every product page on this site lists the frame inside dimension so you can check the fit before you order. Glazing, frames and ratings

Most units here are double glazed, with a clear outer dome over a white prismatic or white smooth inner dome. Prismatic glazing diffuses daylight across the floor and cuts glare and hot spots; white smooth glazing gives softer, more even light. Triple-glazed units add a multi-wall polycarbonate panel for a lower U-factor. Frames are aluminum, and on the Sunoptics, VELUX, Kingspan KT and Birdview TBCM lines they are thermally broken to reduce condensation. Look for FM approval where the building is insured to FM standards, HVHZ or Florida approval in coastal wind zones, and ICC listing where the local jurisdiction asks for it.

Fall protection and code

OSHA 1910.28 treats a skylight as a hole in the roof: any unit 4 feet or more above a lower level needs a screen, guardrail, cover or personal fall-arrest system, and a screen has to support 400 lb or twice the intended load. We carry interior and exterior safety screens, cages and guards sized to the same curbs as the skylights above, so they can be quoted together.
