Babcock Davis makes roof hatches, hatch safety railings and ladder safety posts for commercial buildings, including the thermally broken ThermalMAX line for energy-code projects. What we carry from Babcock Davis

Roof hatches. The BG3630 is the Personnel II hatch for a 36 x 30 inch opening, hinged on the 30 inch side: 14 gauge galvanneal steel cover with a red oxide powder coat, single-wall curb with EZ tab counterflashing and mounting flange, 40 psf live load, spring-assisted opening, single-point latch with inside and outside padlock hasps, and R-6 curb and R-4 cover insulation. The BRHTA36x30S1T is the ThermalMAX version in 11 gauge mill-finish aluminum with a thermally broken curb and 3 inches of foil-faced polyiso in curb and cover (R-20.3), for buildings where the hatch is a thermal bridge that has to be closed.

Hatch safety railings. Both railings fit the 36 x 30 hatch and use 1-1/4 inch schedule 40 aluminum rails and posts, cast aluminum fittings, a self-closing aluminum gate with coil spring, zinc-plated steel mounting brackets and a choice of safety yellow powder coat or mill finish, compliant with OSHA 29 CFR 1910.23. The SRCAY36X30FG mounts to the standard hatch and the SRBAY36X30FG is the thermally broken version for the ThermalMAX hatch.

Ladder safety post. The BSPY is a spring-assisted telescoping steel post in safety yellow that mounts to the top two rungs of a fixed ladder and extends 42 inches above the landing, giving the climber a handhold through the hatch. It uses a stainless steel constant-force spring and type 316 stainless hardware.

Sizing and code notes

OSHA's minimum roof hatch opening is 30 x 30 inches; 36 x 30 is the standard size for a person carrying tools, and the hatch should hinge on the short side so the ladder lands on the long side. Pair every hatch with a guardrail and self-closing gate, which OSHA 1910.28 requires around an open hatch, and with a safety post so the climber has a grab point above the roof line.
