Description
The Babcock Davis BG3630 is the Personnel roof hatch in its most common size: a 36 x 30 inch ladder-access hatch in 14 gauge galvanneal steel with a red oxide powder coat. It is Miami-Dade County and Florida Product approved, which makes it the steel hatch to specify in high-velocity hurricane zones, and its counterflash is pre-drilled for the matching safety railing. Logistics Lighting is a Babcock Davis distributor: we quote the BG3630 with the SRCAY36X30FG railing and BSPY safety post and ship direct from the factory.
Key features of the Personnel roof hatch
- Hurricane tested. Class IV small and large missile impact (TAS 201-94), air pressure and water penetration (TAS 202-94) and cyclic wind pressure (TAS 203-94); Miami-Dade NOA and Florida Product Approval.
- Gas spring operation. A gas spring with damper gives smooth, one-handed lift assistance; a zinc plated automatic hold-open arm with a red grip handle locks the cover open.
- Weathertight. Continuous adhesive-backed EPDM gasket around the cover, single-wall curb with EZ tab counterflash to secure the membrane.
- Insulated. 1 inch polyiso (R-6) in the curb and 1 inch polystyrene (R-4) in the cover, with an 18 gauge liner.
- Secure. Zinc plated slam latch holds the cover against wind uplift, interior and exterior handles with padlock hasps, interior pull-down handle in safety yellow.
- Railing ready. The counterflash is pre-drilled so an OSHA-height safety railing bolts on without field drilling.
Specifications
- Opening: 36 in (width, hinge to latch) x 30 in (length, hinged side), inside curb
- Cover and curb: 14 gauge galvanneal steel, red oxide powder coat; cover stiffened for a 40 psf live load at 1/150 deflection
- Curb: 12 in high, single wall, with EZ tab counterflash and 3-1/2 in mounting flange
- Insulation: 1 in polyiso R-6 curb, 1 in polystyrene R-4 cover
- Hinge: heavy-duty pintle hinge with stainless steel pins
- Approvals: Miami-Dade NOA 21-1201.02, Florida Product Approval (steel and aluminum versions)

BG3630 compared with the Bilco S-20 and the ThermalMAX
The BG3630 and the Bilco S-20 are directly comparable 36 x 30 steel hatches; the Babcock Davis unit adds the hurricane approvals and a powder coat finish in place of primer, so the choice usually follows the specification and lead time. Where the energy code or condensation is the issue, the thermally broken BRHTA36x30S1T ThermalMAX carries R-20 insulation.
Complete the roof access point
OSHA 1910.28 requires an open hatch to be guarded, so the BG3630 is quoted with the SRCAY36X30FG aluminum safety railing with self-closing gate and the BSPY ladder safety post. Fixed ladders are on the Kattsafe page, and every roof access product is on the roof access and fall protection page.
Frequently asked questions
Is the BG3630 approved for Florida? Yes. The steel and aluminum Personnel hatches carry Miami-Dade and Florida Product Approval; the stainless version does not.
Which way does it hinge? On the 30 inch side, so the ladder lands on the long side of the opening.
Does it need a separate curb? No. The 12 inch single-wall curb with counterflash is part of the hatch.
How to get a quote
Send the ladder and hatch worksheet or call 307-633-9696 with quantity, finish and the railing and post you need. We confirm the current lead time on the quote and coordinate delivery. The cut sheet, data sheet, three-part specification and installation manual are in the Documents tab.
