The Bilco LU-1 is the Ladder Up safety post: a telescoping steel post that mounts permanently to the top two rungs of a fixed ladder and extends above the roof hatch, floor door or manhole so the climber can step on and off the ladder upright and balanced, with a positive handhold. It is the standard companion to a Bilco roof hatch and Bil-Guard rail. Logistics Lighting quotes the LU-1 with the hatch and rail and ships direct from Bilco.

Why the post matters
OSHA 1910.23 requires a fixed ladder's side rails to extend 42 inches above the landing, or a grab bar that does the same job. Most hatch ladders stop below the curb, which leaves the climber pulling themselves through the opening with nothing to hold. The LU-1 restores the handhold without changing the ladder.
