Description
The Bilco S-50TB is the thermally broken version of the standard 36 x 30 inch ladder-access roof hatch. Cover and curb are built in 11 gauge aluminum with a thermal break between the interior and exterior metal, and both carry 3 inches of polyisocyanurate insulation (R-20.3), so the hatch stops being the cold spot in the roof that drips condensation in winter. It is the model to specify when the energy code, a conditioned warehouse or a condensation problem drives the decision. Logistics Lighting is a Bilco distributor: we quote the S-50TB with the matching RL2-STB guardrail and LU-1 safety post and ship direct from Bilco.
Key features of the Bilco S-50TB
- Thermally broken cover and curb. Interior and exterior surfaces are separated to minimize heat transfer and resist condensation. Bilco's specification states that cover operation is not affected by temperature.
- R-20.3 insulation. 3 inch polyiso in the cover, protected by an 18 gauge aluminum liner, and 3 inch polyiso in the curb.
- One-hand operation. Compression spring operators give smooth, controlled movement through the full arc so the other hand stays on the ladder; a rigid hold-open arm with a red vinyl grip locks the cover open.
- Weathertight. Fully welded corners on cover and curb, a 5 inch beaded cover flange and a heavy extruded EPDM gasket bonded to the cover.
- Bil-Clip flashing. The integral capflashing has stamped tabs 6 inches on center that bend inward to hold single-ply membrane.
- Corrosion resistant. Mill-finish aluminum with zinc plated and chromate sealed hardware; Type 316 stainless hardware is available for corrosive environments.
Specifications
- Opening: 36 in x 30 in (914 x 762 mm), single leaf, hinged on the 30 inch side
- Cover: 11 gauge (2.3 mm) aluminum, 5 in beaded flange, formed reinforcing members
- Curb: 11 gauge aluminum, 12 in (305 mm) high, 5-1/2 in flange with 7/16 in holes for securing to the deck
- Insulation: 3 in polyisocyanurate, R-20.3 (U = 0.279 W/m2K), cover and curb
- Live load 40 psf (195 kg/m2) with maximum deflection 1/150 of span; wind uplift 20 psf

S-50TB or S-20?
The S-20 is the same 36 x 30 hatch in 14 gauge galvanized steel with 1 inch of insulation and a red oxide primer, and it costs less. Choose the S-50TB where IECC C402 or a similar energy code applies to the roof, where the building is conditioned and the hatch sits over an occupied area, or where an existing steel hatch is dripping condensation. The comparable thermally broken hatch from Babcock Davis is the BRHTA36x30S1T.
Complete the roof access point
OSHA 1910.28 treats an open hatch as a hole in the roof, so the S-50TB is normally quoted with the RL2-STB Bil-Guard rail, which is the version of the hatch guardrail built for thermally broken Bilco hatches, and the LU-1 Ladder Up safety post. Fixed ladders are on our Kattsafe page and the full range is on the roof access and fall protection page.
Frequently asked questions
What is the R-value of the S-50TB? R-20.3 in both the cover and the curb, from 3 inches of polyisocyanurate.
Does it need a separate curb? No. The 12 inch insulated curb is part of the hatch and mounts to the deck through its flange.
Will the RL2-S rail fit it? Use the RL2-STB. The rail and gate are the same, but the mounting brackets are made for the thermally broken capflashing.
How to get a quote
Send the ladder and hatch worksheet or call 307-633-9696 with quantity, finish, and the railing and post you need. We confirm the current Bilco lead time on the quote and coordinate delivery. The cut sheet, three-part specification, installation manual and data sheet are in the Documents tab.
