Description
The Babcock Davis BSPY is a spring-assisted telescoping safety post in safety yellow powder-coated steel. It mounts to the top two rungs of a fixed vertical ladder and extends 42 inches above the landing so a worker climbing through a roof hatch or floor door has a handhold above the opening. Logistics Lighting quotes the BSPY with the Babcock Davis hatch and railing and ships direct from the factory.
Key features of the BSPY safety post
- 42 inch extension above the landing platform, the height OSHA expects from ladder side rails or a grab.
- Spring assisted. A stainless steel constant-force balancing spring makes the post easy to raise and lower; an extension lock bracket holds it up and a release rod lets it retract.
- Fits most ladders. Adjustable mounting channel for 10 to 12 inch rung spacing; clamp brackets reverse to suit 3/4 to 1-1/4 inch rungs with the standard 2 inch bolts.
- Corrosion resistant. Type 316 stainless mounting hardware.
- Rated. 200 lb design load; complies with OSHA 1910.29 for fixed ladders.

- Model BSPY: steel, safety yellow powder coat
- Post: 1-1/2 x 1-1/2 x 1/8 in high-strength square tubing with a pull-up loop at the upper end
- Extended height: 42 in above the landing; overall length about 61-1/2 in
- Spring: stainless steel constant force
- Hardware: Type 316 stainless steel

Where it fits
The BSPY completes a Babcock Davis access point: the BG3630 or BRHTA36x30S1T ThermalMAX hatch, the SRCAY36X30FG or SRBAY36X30FG railing, and the post. The Bilco equivalent is the LU-1 Ladder Up. Fixed ladders themselves are on the Kattsafe page.
Frequently asked questions
Does the BSPY work with hollow-rung ladders? Yes, but Babcock Davis instructs that the top two rungs be reinforced with a solid round bar before mounting.
Can it be used on a floor door? Yes. The same post serves floor access doors with the post retracted below the door when closed.
Are the hatch and ladder included? No. The post ships with its mounting hardware only.
How to get a quote
Send the ladder and hatch worksheet or call 307-633-9696 with the rung size and spacing if known and the hatch it serves. We confirm the current lead time on the quote. The cut sheet, data sheet, specification and installation manual are in the Documents tab.
