Sunoptics Prismatic Skylights: How to Read SMD, SSVT and SVT2 Model Numbers

Sunoptics · Skylight and Smoke Vent Guide

By the Logistics Lighting team · Updated November 2026

Sunoptics Signature Series skylights are prismatic plastic domes on an aluminum frame that sits over a roof curb. As a Sunoptics distributor, we list the skylights, the SSVT and SVT2 smoke vents, and the guards that go with them. Each model name packs type, size, lens and rating into one line, such as SMD 4080 C2W1. This guide decodes those names and matches each unit to its curb and guard, using only the Sunoptics documents posted on our product pages.

How to read an SMD skylight model number

Take SMD 4080 C3W0 HVHZ as the example:

SegmentWhat it means
SMDSignature Series fixed (non-opening) skylight, curb mounted, on the thermally broken 800MD frame
4080Nominal size in feet: 4 x 8. 4040 is 4 x 4, 4060 is 4 x 6, 5060 is 5 x 6
C2W1 or C3W0The lens pair. C2W1 is 0.165 inch clear prismatic polycarbonate over 0.125 inch white prismatic polycarbonate. C3W0 is clear prismatic polycarbonate over white prismatic acrylic
FMRTG or HVHZFMRTG marks the FM rating. HVHZ marks the version built and tested for Florida's High Velocity Hurricane Zone

The Sunoptics documents we have do not define C2W1 or C3W0 letter by letter, so we describe each by its cut sheet. Our SMD 4060 C2W1, SMD 4080 C2W1 and SMD 5060 C2W1 listings are marked FM rated even though FMRTG is not in their names. If your insurer requires FM, say so on the quote request.

Sizes and curb fit

Sunoptics does not supply the curb, and the size code is only nominal. The data sheet says the finished curb, flashing included, should be 1 inch smaller than the skylight frame's inside dimension, leaving 1/2 inch of clearance per side.

SizeUnits we listFrame inside (in)Finished curb outside, max (in)
4040 (4 x 4 ft)SMD 4040 C2W1 FMRTG, SMD 4040 C3W0 HVHZ51-1/4 x 51-1/450-1/4 x 50-1/4

A Sunoptics 4080 fits the same 48 x 96 inch curb that curb makers call 4896: the AES 4896 ARC3 and the Curbs Plus CPC-3 4896 both measure 51 x 99 inches outside. For a 4040, the AES 4040 ARC3 and CPC-3 4040 measure 50 x 50 outside. The AES 5060 ARC6 is 62.375 x 74.375 outside.

The Florida evaluation report rates the HVHZ unit impact resistant, so no shutter is needed. Its installation drawing calls for #12 x 2 inch hex head screws within 8 inches of each corner and 12 inches on center, with 1-3/8 inch minimum embedment. Ask us for the current Florida and Miami-Dade documents before you submit.

Installing on the curb

  • The curb must be square, flashed and level, with a top at least 1 inch wide for the seal.
  • Leave 1/2 inch of nominal clearance on all four sides. The frame should drop on without force.
  • Double and triple glazed units ship with air seal tape on the frame, so the curb top needs no caulk.
  • Fasten with #12 x 1-1/2 inch hex washer head stainless screws, one per hole, run just snug. Overtightening distorts the frame, can crack the lenses and may void the warranty.
  • ICC-ES report ESR-3557 requires the glazing to sit at least 4 inches above the roof.

Smoke vents: SSVT, SVT2 and SVT2CV

Sunoptics smoke vents use the 870B frame. In a fire, the fusible link melts and gas shocks open the vent doors to at least 90 degrees; interior and exterior pull rings open them by hand. The SVT2 comes UL/ULC 793 listed or FM approved (Class 4430). FM-approved units must be double glazed clear over high-white polycarbonate, rated for 10 psf snow load, fitted with a link of at least 360 F, and sized from 4060 to 5080.

We list the SSVT 4080 C2W2 10 360 (FM rated), the SSVT 4080 C2W2 10 370 (UL listed), the SVT2 5080 (UL listed) and the SVT2CV 4080, a UL-listed single-glazed vent with a continuous vent blade. The short SSVT name reads size, lens pair, snow load in psf, then link temperature. The long SVT2 name follows the Sunoptics ordering logic:

Segment of SVT2CV 4080 SGZ CC1P125 WH 370FL 10LB 870B 1BL ULMeaning
SVT2CVContinuous-venting smoke vent (SVT2 is the standard vent)
SGZ or DGZSingle or double glazed
CC1P125 or CC1Polycarbonate glazing (CC1P125 is 1/8 inch polycarbonate)
WH or CLWHWhite lens, or clear over white
370FLFusible link temperature, degrees F
10LBSnow load lift rating, 10 psf
870BStandard smoke vent frame
1BLOne-blade continuous vent
ULUL listed (FMRTG would mark FM approved)

Set the vent on a level, square curb and remove the two transport safety plates only after it is fastened. Test each door with the exterior release; closing a door takes two people, one at each end.

Safety screens and guards

Sunoptics skylights ship without fall protection. In its fall protection letter, Sunoptics says a new 4 x 8 Signature Series skylight passed a 400 pound drop test, but warns that plastics age under UV and recommends a safety screen to meet OSHA 1910.29(e).

GuardMountsSized byConstruction
CLPOG clip-on guard (4040, 4080, 5060)Under the skylight, clipped to the curb topCurb inside (W48 L96 is 48 x 96)8 gauge galvanized wire, 4 x 4 inch grid
BURGB 4080 burglar barsUnder the skylight, on the curbCurb inside, 48 x 961/2 inch steel bars 5 inches on center across the short side; hardware sold separately
ESFP exterior screen (4040, 4080)Over the skylight, attached to its frameSkylight frame inside (W52.250 L100.250)3 gauge galvanized wire, 4 x 4 inch grid

Sunoptics states that the CLPOG meets OSHA fall protection requirements and that the ESFP is designed and tested to the OSHA general industry standard. The curb inside should be 1/4 to 5/8 inch larger than a clip-on guard. The ESFP keeps the screen out of view from the floor, but operable smoke vents can only take interior screens. Background: OSHA fall protection for skylights.

FAQ

Will a Sunoptics 4080 fit my 4896 curb?

Usually. A standard 51 x 99 inch curb fits, as long as the flashed curb is no larger than 51-1/4 x 99-1/4 inches.

Are Sunoptics skylights made in the USA?

The 800MD data sheet says they are assembled in the USA and meet Buy America(n) requirements, with 10 and 15 year limited warranties available.

Can I put the ESFP exterior screen on a smoke vent?

No. Operable smoke vents can only use interior safety screens.
